Summer is drawing to a close, a lot of anime are finishing their runs; and everybody’s now looking ahead to the traditionally packed autumn season (partly cos most stuff that’s airing now sucks). Anime radio shows however, appear to operate on a schedule of their own. They’re usually used to drum up some interest for the anime before it starts airing but a few have bucked the trend lately - it’s nearing the end of a cour and some radio shows just started… here’s a look at a few that have already begun, or will start airing pretty soon.

Satou Rina is often overlooked, and in fact, I don’t think a lot of people actually recognise her name at all. And if they do, it’s probably because she voices Negi Springfield. I myself am quite a fan of her voice, and think it’d be nice if people knew a little more about her.

I’ll be doing a series of posts on anime/game song artists, songwriters and composers - the people whose songs otaku are singing all the time but know next to nothing about. I confess I’m a tad obsessed in this department, downloading & listening to any old rubbish I come across in the hope of unearthing a gem - OSTs, image albums, free downloads on eroge makers’ websites, anything goes….

This time out is the artists who do music mostly for games, and doujin artists - bearing in mind that Comiket 72 starts tomorrow, these are some of the names to look out for when browsing through the normal sources wondering what to get and what to ignore.

One of the longest running seiyuu radio shows around, Mikako@PayoPayo (Mikako wa Payopayo) has been on the internet airwaves since April 2001 and is still going strong with more than 300 episodes to date. The show is hosted by the moderately popular Takahashi Mikako, whose more well-known roles include Yamada in Honey & Clover, Ren in Erementar Gerad and Sadaharu (the frickin’ huge dog) in Gintama.

Not quite sure why I’m still watching Moetan, but a lot of it is down to cuteness and my general affection for bad English. The latter is why I enjoy the radio show more than the anime itself, where humour comes in fits and spurts and the Engrish puns seem more of a sideshow than the main event. Ooh, and DVD1 comes with a Listening Radio CD~~ Anyway, more on the radio show - I know few people listen to radio shows because of an inability to comprehend Japanese, but hey; half of the Moetan show is in English! Albeit very, very bad and very, very broken English.
