Anime Scribblings #3

….not according to keikaku. My ridiculous self-imposed rule of watching only 5 regular TV anime series at any given time is threatening to blow up thanks to the summer season. In years past the shows that have aired around this period have been… well, a bit rubbish – I’ve had the (un)fortunate pleasure of being entertained by the likes of Moetan, various iterations of Zero no Tsukaima and Night Head Genesis before, but it’s a different story this time around – for once I might have to drop shows because I don’t have time to watch them rather than because they’re totally shit! Oh what I’d give for 48 hours in a day…

The flipside: For the love of mature onee-san voices

To prove that I’m not a demented soul that goes around ranting at random inanimate objects in the middle of the street, I’m gonna spend this page celebrating my love for the sexy, mature voices that moisten your eyes and burn your cheeks rosy red as you attempt a halting ‘Go-gokigenyou, oneesama!’ whilst chasing after their flowing skirts (no running, walking only please!) in the garden of maidens.

Exploring the Natsu no Arashi Chara Song Album – Utagoe Kissa Hakobune

I guess it’s no secret that I’m extremely fond of Japanese oldies, ranging from folk to enka to kayōkyoku (歌謡曲). So it was a hugely pleasant surprise for me to learn that the Natsu no Arashi character song album would feature covers of huge Jpop classics by people such as Yamaguchi Momoe, Tulips & Inoue Yosui and I was eager to hear what it sounded like before I ploughed my money into it (y’know, seiyuu can’t really sing & all).

For the hate of crap moeblob voices

In recent months I’ve been finding my tolerance for high-pitched voices at an all-time low, something I came to realise the further I got into watching K-ON! and Hatsukoi Limited. I liked both shows (to a certain extent) but often found myself getting lost in a swirl of ‘Ui!’s and ‘Yui!’s and ‘Onii-chan!’s, and at times was struggling not to succumb to the urge to hurl my mouse at the laptop screen with every passing squeal.

June 09 Anime Music Highlights

In terms of releases June was a lot more sedate compared to the flurry in May, which I was somewhat thankful for. Man, it seems I’m always complaining about work recently – sorry, quarter-life crisis.

A fresh start for Sakai Kanako

Finally Sakai Kanako gets out from the wretched clutches of RAMS! This may not interest the casual seiyuu fan too much, but RAMS are a seiyuu agency who have been pretty adept at mismanaging and destroying (ok, maybe a bit of an exaggeration…) their talents’ careers. Sakai’s departure from the agency on the 1st of July follows that of singer Ohmi Tomoe and Sakai’s former Clover bandmates Saito Momoko & Shoji Yui in 2008, leaving Nogawa Sakura, Inoue Nana and Miyazaki Ui as RAMS’ only real assets remaining.

The 22-year old Sakai debuted in 2005 with the lead role of Onda Aka in REC and was Ruri in Lovedol and Kikuri in Jigoku Shoujo, but has mainly focused on presenting TV shows (Anime Paradise) – which seemed a waste of her talents.

A bit surprisingly, Kanako has chosen to move to a relatively small theatre company called Gekidan Come Come Minikina (劇団カムカムミニキーナ) – I don’t believe they have much, if any experience at handling seiyuu but perhaps Sakai just wants greater freedom and control over her career. Certainly she’s not sitting idle, the announcement of the change on her blog was accompanied by the launching of a new official website as well as a radio show called Takulog.

Here’s hoping for the best in her future career.
