More thoughts when I finish laughing.

No of winners correctly predicted in kujibiki draw: 1
No of winners correctly predicted using lousy theory: 23 (+ 1)
No of winners I wished would win and really ended up winning: 3

Brief thoughts

  • OK so I guess we got trolled this year with a lot more award winners that made ’sense’. Sense in that I expected them to win awards, but in the wrong categories?
  • Earlier on I had mused that it’d be nice if the awards were more transparent this time but it actually got worse – last year you might recall that we got a list of preliminary nominees at the halfway point but this year there was nothing, zip, zilch. Just an announcement of the awards and 6 months later they roll out the ‘winners’. They might as well cancel public voting next year.
  • The three that I wanted to win and did win were Inoue Kazuhiko, Tomatsu Haruka and Nakajima Megumi so colour me amused. I suppose I’m happy that Hirano Aya didn’t win Best Supporting after all? That would’ve made me laugh my pants off.
  • I’m also kinda surprised they chose Kaji over Maeno, maybe the latter’s age is counting against him. No idea why Ito Kanae got shut out. Maybe next year? I called Okamoto in both the kujibiki and predictions, I wish I’d stuck to naming Tomatsu as a winner.
  • I wouldn’t like to think what Kugimiya won for – neither Shana nor Louise are particularly strong cases (and Taiga doesn’t make the cut). Endo Aya (Sheryl Nome) got relegated to a supporting award, suffering the same ‘why the heck did they give her this award’ fate that befell Kugyu (Nagi in Hayate no Gotoku!) last year *mwahahaha*
  • Kamiya doesn’t have a strong case for best male either, Zetsubo is a lame reason and Natsume Yujincho isn’t his strongest work. Inoue Kazuhiko I can agree with though, Nyanko-sensei was easily one of the best performances of 2008.
  • Sugita Tomokazu… no idea what’s going on there. Maybe they felt bad for not giving an award to him earlier for Haruhi or Gintama? It’s probably Macross F again right?
  • I don’t think Fukuyama deserves best personality, unless we’re talking about his public persona in which his ego which is larger than the size of Leopard’s golden balls would kill the competition easily. Kamiya for best personality sucks. Otherwise Yukarin wuz robbed again.
  • Nakajima Megumi won as I predicted, but if it was really based on merit then Mizuki Nana would sweep the board every year.
  • You think there’s no Kadokawa connection this year? I thought Macross F would’ve been a strong enough case, 5 of the winning seiyuu were in it.
  • Poor Nakamura Yuichi. The guy’s got shafted two years in a row now (should’ve won something, anything for Oofuri last year). Obviously, Sigma 7 won’t play ball with the awards panel so Inoue Marina, Yukana, Wakamoto Norio & Yuichi may be destined to never win Seiyuu Awards.
  • Repeat winners are lame. Kamiya, Kugimiya, Hirano and Fukuyama all have 2 gongs each now – should we expect next year’s awards to have winners from previous years then?
  • This year sees less rage from me so I’m not going to point out all the corporate connections this time. Pleasantly surprised that they did give recognition to deserving people like Sawashiro, Tomatsu, Okamoto, Inoue and Nakajima but there are an equal amount of head scratching awards dished out.
  • Oh…. and I wonder who won the overseas thing? I’m done with the Seiyuu awards this year and have no desire to spew any more shit over it. I will still do a kujibiki draw for next year’s public voting though, I think it’s lovely fun.

    Note: I removed the profanity cos AnimeNano filters posts out lmao.

      Was Macross affiliated with Kadokawa at all? I don’t recall seeing their name in the credits.

    • I honestly laughed out loud when I saw your outburst beside Inoue Kazuhiko and Sawashiro Miyuki’s names. XD

      So are these official? Or just predictions?

    • j1m0ne

      @Andrew
      Kadokawa publishes the Macross Ace magazine & the light novel and all related manga are serialised in Kadokawa-published magazines.

      @OtaAgg
      I had to remove swear words lol. Yeah they’re official, advance copies of Voice Newtype spoil the winners every year.

    • Wow, the winners actually made sense this year. Yay for Kugyuu!

    • LEOPARD FTW! The only winner I fully agree with.

      I also agree with Nyanko winning, at least if that is what they chose him for (almost certainly).

    • [...] fair event, so some of the winners should come as no surprise. j1m0ne has naturally posted up something about it. Anyway here is my take on the seiyuu that won that I do know about in some way. By the [...]

    • Chibi-Chibi

      o.O
      not just lol but LOL
      But where is Nakamura? I suppose it happened the same to Maeno this time as it did to Nakamura last year but i was pretty sure Nakamura will get something this year o.O

    • Damn I didn’t see the profanities! Can’t you just censor it with stars or something? …on second thought I can guess what “WOAH” was, it feels out of place. :P

      Repeat awards are ok, compared to dodgy awards.. srsly poor Endo Aya.

      I got 2 right votes (+ few “I knew it..”) but that’s it, no Yukarin, no more votes for this shitty award anymoar.

    • sandy4a

      Generally, I can ignore voting from the next seiyuu award. I wonder how will nico comments be like when the ceremony video is uploaded lol

    • Kraker2k

      When do we get to see the International Award winner?

    • r

      YUKARIN! щ(゚Д゚щ)

      KitaEri would have been fine, too.

    • Vness

      I, for the most part, am pleased with the winners of this year’s Seiyuu Awards, especially in the best supporting male category. I really enjoyed Inoue as Madara/Nyanko-sensei in Natsume Yuujinchou. As for Sugita…he’s be a personal favorite of mine even though I didn’t really follow him last year.

      I’m also very glad that Megumi Nakajima won for best singer. She has a singing voice that’s VERY different from all the sugary-sweet seiyuu J-pop singers I’ve been hearing lately. I can’t wait to see who wins the overseas award!

    • j1m0ne

      Censored version restored!

      Yeah I should’ve mentioned poor Nakamura Yuichi – the guy’s got shafted again… [edits post]

      …Oh I can’t imagine who wins the overseas award. Anywone wanna bet Hirano Aya? Without her nobody wanna buy postcards, DVDs, mugs, dakimakura or whatever crappy merchandise they churn out right?

    • Nis

      I agree with Nakamura Yuichi, that guy seriously deserve some awards by now. That goes for Yukana and Inoue Marina too…Hell, now that I think about it, sigma7 has some of the best voices and it bugs me that they won’t get an award.

      For that matter…Wakamoto Norio is way too amusing to not get an award.

      I’m sorta in a dilemma for Hirano Aya. I mean, I liked her when she started out, but why am I starting to get the feeling she’s trying way too hard now?

      Also, I agree…What did Kugimiya Rie did to win her this award? I mean, usually when someone gets an award, you usually have that image of whatever that person did pop into your mind. Not in this case though, I can’t even recall anything Kugimiya Rie did lately other than Taiga. (At least, this year. That and perhaps Mnesnymoe or that gore porn I can’t spell)

      In fact, that goes for Tomokazu Sugita as well. He should’ve gotten an award for Kyon or Gintoki way back when. However, now they hand him a supporting male award? For what? The only memorable role he had lately was Leon in Macross F.

      Omg, this is so eff’d up. Haha.

    • It’s biased!! for not allowing sigma seven to win ♪♪♪ d(`Д´)b♪♪♪

    • Does anyone have a date when the voting closed? I will laugh if it closed before Soaring Cake aired and Jun won it for Leopard.

    • Taka

      This might be a longshot but maybe Kugyu won for Miharu lead in Nabari no Ou. I didn’t watch enough of it but that’s the only thing I would think that is radically different from previous roles. If that’s the case though she totally robbed it from the best female seiyuu voicing a young emo boy of the year, Miyuki Sawashiro for Kure-nai.

    • Dav

      Hur, I’m glad Inoue, Sawashiro and Tomatsu bagged awards. I was rooting for either Hayami or KitaEri for the best singer because I’m a biased whore when it comes to their voices, but Nakajima did a great job in performing Macross’ songs anyway. Time to look forward to Basquash!, I guess.

      Meh, I wanted Yukarin to win best personality. Nearly 6 years on of Kuro Usagi and still no award? ==

      Btw, Taka’s comment got me a bit curious. Does a character’s gender matter when it comes to nominating a seiyuu for a particular category? I think it mostly applies to female VAs doing male roles (I’ve yet to see a male VA doing female roles). Just a useless question from moi. ^^

    • Hikari

      Yay for Sawashiro, Sugita and Inoue. I’m generally happy with the winners this year but… WTF? Endo Aya as “supporting actress”? Maybe it’s for Lucky Star, not Macross. I really wanted Toyoguchi Megumi to get an award for Klan Klan but if Sheryl is considered a supporting character then Klan Klan is a nobody.

      I wonder when the overseas category winner will be announced… I’ll seriously RAGE if it’s Hirano Aya. Please, please, let it be someone who has talent (and more than only 2 good roles)

    • j1m0ne

      @Nis & Taka
      These awards are arbitrary, they never mention what specific role they win for so Kugimiya for best female is just a piss-take. She should’ve gotten it last year, not this. Miharu in Nabari… no way. The anime sunk without a trace, and Kugyu’s performance was forgettable.

      @dodgethis
      Nah, best personality rewards radio & TV presenting not anime work so FukuJun’s Leopard doesn’t really come into the equation, I was just having a laugh about it. Besides, SoraKake is a 2009 anime and the voting window was between (I think) September-December.

      @Dav
      Character gender doesn’t matter, I think they explicitly mention that on the website. Example – Saiga Mitsuki won last year, and she only ever voices guys.

      @Hikari
      Yeah well, I’m sure they wanted to award Endo somehow and with Kugyu having a best supporting gong already they pushed her up to best lead, leaving Aya with either best supporting or best new female and the choice was obvious. I wanted Megu to win too but… yeah.

      As for overseas category… I voted for Kaneda Tomoko FFS, so I genuinely do not care who wins.

    • chanpon

      One of the reasons I don’t get worked up over these things, one way or the other. These awards have yet to prove to me they are more than another cross-promotional opportunity, or a reason for studios and the big anime houses to throw a party and ‘pat yourself on yourselves backs’ in self-congratulations.

      I’m happy to see Sugita be recognized for anything (aside his weirdness), but I’m with you that Nakamura has been blazing hot the last two years and to not hear a peep about him makes it hard to take these seriously. That, and of course calling these seiyuu awards, but ignoring a good half or more of the opportunities for seiyuu work, such as cds, games, narrations, dubs, etc. These are anime popularity awards, any way you look at it.

    • PPP

      Ah… Politics. It all happens anywhere. Even in so-called ‘fair’ awards. =D

      But I guess this is all some kind of joke. We have our individual eternal winners in our hearts (SCREAM HER NAME OUT IN UR HEART FANBOYS!), that I guess would suffice.

      Giving awards, prizes… Well, public recognition. Guess that’s all. :)

    • hibana

      The only placing in the awards that doesn’t surprise me, really, is Nakajima Megumi. The others, well…

      Like most people I’ve been rooting for Nakamura for best male for this year’s awards. After all, if I’m not mistaken he was the active male seiyuu in 2008. Why in the world has he not won it yet?! Nikumura has long been due for some serious attention. Stupid corporate bigwigs…

      I voted for Sugita for the overseas award this year (you gotta love his hilarious voice), so I’m glad he at least won best supporting male.
