Looking back at anisong and soundtrack releases in 2009 and picking out the highlights. Got my copy of the album in the post today and given the CD and DVD a quick spin. I’ve been kinda looking forward to it, mostly for the DVD footage – I feared the music would be awful beyond comprehension but I am relieved to report that’s not quite the case. Anisong has always been a huge part of my fandom, it’s what got me into anime in the first place so it seems natural that I should draw up a list of the albums that I’ve loved most over the past 10 years. Unfortunately the industry isn’t really album-driven so looking for a good CD is like trying to find that elusive needle in a haystack. As such, it didn’t take me too long to make the choices for this list – most of them were really obvious in that they’ve been on my iPod rotation for forever. It’s that time of the year again! Errr not quite Christmas, I was thinking more that December is the time when people start waxing lyrical and reminiscing about their favourite favourites and generally stroking their own lovely egos and shouting ‘Screw you, my faves are better than your faves!!’. I’m not gonna pretend to be any different so expect a series of these over the next month or so. Right! Kicking things off is a look at my favourite anime theme songs in 2009. Refer to original post for download. The album was recorded over a period of just over three months, just me and my Yamaha guitar and my laptop (with Audacity). Originally the concept was to pick the best of 2009’s anime songs, record them and release the results with my year-end review post – but the plan sort of got knocked sideways when I jokingly started writing a song for Chihara Minori sometime in September. Then I started expanding to songs from before 2009 and in the end I just thought ‘What the heck, I’ll just make it a general anisong album thing’ and set 18th November, my birthday, as the deadline. Limited Chords Works was a title I had chosen right from the start – I shall be modest and truthful and say that I find it incredibly tough to sing and play guitar at the same time, which is why the arrangements are kept as simple as possible. Honestly, I didn’t spend a lot of time with each track – the process went something like this: 1. Pick any random track from my 5000+ over anime songs. It took on average, 20-30 minutes to do each song – some were nailed first take, others took me absolute ages to get in even a half-decent attempt of – in total I recorded around 60-70 songs. Notes on the individual songs follow. Hmmm. This started out as a joke but got out of hand & somehow I recorded an entire album’s worth of crappy anisong covers despite the fact that I can neither sing nor play the guitar. Also please don’t point out my guitar is out of tune, the last time I tried to tune it I broke my G string. Also I don’t own a capo. Or a plectrum. Limited Chords Works Vol.1 will hopefully be the first of no more such projects. Dedicated to onii-chan, rai.5-0 (cluck cluck) and Hirano Aya – may your eardrums and your anison-damashii forever be broken upon hearing these songs!! Convenient Romanized Tracklist For the Kanji & Kana Impaired. …..Happy song identifying! I was actually halfway through writing liner notes for each track but… well, I didn’t write the other half. Also VOLUME ISSUES, SORRY. A conversation I had on gtalk about the album:
Aaaaanndddd…. happy 1/4 of a hundredth birthday to me, and happy 29th to Chihara Minori. etc etc To the few people who knew of its existence here’s みのりんのうた (Minorin no Uta), the song I wrote for Minorin. Tirol, graves and lost remotes yay. 下手な日本語でサーセン。 This was the last demo of the song I did and I doubt I’m ever going to record the rest of the verses about her silly broken lamp or not having money to pay for her meal. MP3 version (not sure why you’d want it but….) Thank you Google for letting me steal images. Musician Hirasawa Susumu, leader of the techno-pop group P-MODEL and composer of soundtracks for Millenium Actress, Paprika and Paranoia Agent had an amusing fit of rage on Twitter starting yesterday (and is still ongoing). The reason? He’s being mistaken for one Hirasawa Yui, she of K-ON! fame. The problem stems from the fact that moeblob Yui’s name (平沢 唯) is so similar to his own (平沢 進), bringing him a ton of followers (and maybe bots?) after he casually mentioned Yui on his Twitter.
