Comparing Hashihime and j1m0ne + Why People Hate Mizuki Nana

-If Hashihime was an art critic, j1m0ne would be a trashy tabloid writer.
-If Hashihime was The Phantom of the Opera, j1m0ne would be Spamalot.
-If Hashihime was a triple Michelin-starred establishment touting French cuisine, j1m0ne would be the greasy burger stand on the corner of 6th Avenue.
-If Hashihime was Nicole Kidman, j1m0ne would be Lindsay Lohan.
-If Hashihime was a macrobiotic diet, j1m0ne would be the Atkins diet.
-If Hashihime was Vanity Fair, j1m0ne would be OK! magazine.
-If Hashihime was Gisele Bundchen, j1m0ne would be Naomi Campbell.
-If Hashihime was the Academy Awards, j1m0ne would be the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
-If Hashihime was Brazilian Pudding-flavoured Pocky (which is bloody awesome), j1m0ne would be a manky Mapo Tofu-flavoured Pretz (yes it exists)
-If Hashihime was Carla Bruni, j1m0ne would be Camilla Parker-Bowles.
-If Hashihime was Manchester United FC, j1m0ne would be Bolton Wanderers.
-If Hashihime was a bottle of premium champagne, j1m0ne would be a can of warm Dr Pepper.
-If Hashihime was Hirano Aya, j1m0ne would be Kusayanagi Junko.
-If Hashihime was C.C., j1m0ne would be Cheese-kun.
-If Hashihime was an Aston Martin DBS, j1m0ne would be a Reliant Robin.

And I think that some of those differences are why Hashihime won the Blogger’s Choice and I the People’s Choice for the Anime Blog Awards. I believe that bloggers have more than half a brain which is why they can tell the difference between a classy blog with concise and informative analysis and a silly blog overflowing with drunken ramblings, unlike the masses who are easily fooled by fake pictures of two women kissing. And that’s why I’m a blogger!

Now that I’ve insulted the intelligence of my readers I’ll probably win nothing next year. But you know you secretly love me even if you don’t want to admit it.

I’m also starting to feel that next to “Hirano Aya”, j1m0ne is the word that crops up the most on Hashihime’s blog nowadays (≧д≦)ノ♪ “j1m0ne” came up four times on his/her most recent post ヾ( ゚Д゚)ノ

Yours truly is honoured m(;∇;)m

On a separate note…

I rarely check my stats for keyword searches but I did so on a whim today and what did I see?

Google Search Keyword: “Why people hate Mizuki Nana”

My Answer: I don’t know and I really don’t care ( ̄▽ ̄)

This reminds me of Hashihime’s post on Why People Hate Hirano Aya. Sigh.

I dislike loads of things like yaoi, baseball & corn soup but the fact that other people love them makes no difference to me, as long as they don’t try to shove corn soup up my nostrils.

I also like a lot of things like the smell of petrol, chicken fricassee & bouncy castles but I don’t expect other people to like them nor do I feel like trying to turn somebody who hates bouncy castles into a bouncy castle lover.

I don’t even bother attempting to qualify why I hate what I hate, since the answer is likely to be “Just because”.

But er… let me attempt to provide 5 reasons why I think people hate Mizuki Nana:
1. She yodels too much.
2. Her anime roles suck.
3. She’s more successful than Hirano Aya.
4. キモイ
5. ブサイク
6. 貧乳
and so on.

And last but not least… yay! I’ve managed to outdo Hashihime by mentioning the word Hashihime 19 times within a post. I think listening to fripSide NAO Project! on repeat today has crippled my brain.

Kusayanagi Junko isn’t too bad if we think of the alternative. :P Don’t worry, we (fags who fantasize too much with our tiny brains) will still secretly love you.

    ..btw, I thought DFC is an asset? ^^;
And yeah, I couldn’t care less why people hate what I love. I actually hate those Nana-fans-who-never-buy-anything a lot more than those haters.

Smell of petrol…got a bad habit you want to hide there?

To be honest I don’t think it’s fair that you consider your blog trashier than Hashihime’s. His blog is just more informative per # of posts, where as yours focus first on entertainment and second on information. It has no bearing on the class of either yours or his blog.

As to Aya Hirano hatred, I think if you read the last 3 comments at the bottom of that hashihime link, it sums up the problem with Hirano fans. I mean, ok, there’s nothing wrong with liking her, but it remains a problem that:
    1. she can’t sing all that well, but is going down that road.
    2. she really hasn’t proven herself as a voice actress.
    3. and as a result her fans tend to skew irrational/retard.

    “6. 貧乳”

I thought some people like that.

I’ve got a string hit that says “mizuki nana can’t sing”. Maybe it’s the same person?

Nana-chan is ugly?? D= I can’t believe it..I mean sure she ain’t the prettiest seiyu/singer around…but ugly? Nah. And yes, I like DFC people…and Nana-chan is pretty much very DFC….so I like her. End of story.
and oh j1m0ne: please don’t treat yourself so harshly *sob sob*. Your blog is my only source of entertainment everytime I idle myself in the office XD. *me wipes off crocodile tears*

    hashihime:

I’m not sure whether to be flattered or offended. I guess both, lol. The idea that my blog is classier than yours must be a trick of the light. I’d write like you if I could, but I’m too boring for that. At least I’ve been on the yuri-seiyuu-gossip bandwagon from early on.

Please don’t think of me as a Nana-hater. I just don’t get her. I admire her ability and like her as a person, but I am still trying to understand the appeal of her music.

I mention you so often recently to give credit where credit is due. I think of you as an expert on music in general and Japanese pop in particular. If I had good taste, I’d like the more skillful singers, but I guess I prefer amateurish rock over more professional mainstream (?) music.

But omo is being offensive in his/her little rant about Hirano fans. I hesitated for a long time whether to even say I didn’t enjoy Nana’s music, because her fans seem so passionate and touchy. But maybe the criticism of Aya by people who can’t seem to grasp what’s good about her finally got to me. Or maybe I just got tired of hiding my opinions.

I can easily understand why people don’t like Aya’s singing, since it isn’t at the level of expertise of some others’ and she likes a genre of music many people don’t. But I do wish people would watch a bit of Nijuumensou or NANA to hear what she can do in a real dramatic role. If they still don’t like her work after that, fair enough, but since no-one who dislikes her ever seems to mention those shows, maybe they haven’t seen them.

By the way, I’ve hardly ever read it, but the main anti-Nana thread on 2channel used to have a title saying something about her looking like a badger. Seems like a fairly shallow crew. I must say, I have always thought that vast numbers of otaku loved Nana, and vast numbers of otaku hated Aya. Maybe one is just defensive of one’s own favorites.

Hint: I rarely read Hashihime’s blog, yet I read your’s on a regular basis. Maybe it’s that I care to read entertainment and opinion than pure information. Or it could be that I can’t stand Aya Hirano.

    >>”But omo is being offensive in his/her little rant about Hirano fans.”

His. Though that’s not important really. :P

Taste in music is subjective, so that really shouldn’t be such a big deal. Hell, I disagree with j1m0ne on much of her reviews on music (which makes me wonder if it’s just me with really sucky taste), but it’s okay. I hope.

    And j1m0ne, sorry for voting for you as a blogger then for the ABA final votes. Jeez. ;_;
I’m on Link’s boat as well with what I read.

    >>”Her anime roles suck.”
You could say the anime she’s in sucks (which I would beg to differ with you), but I’d have to disagree with that statement. She does have a fun range though (compare her as Touma from Minami-ke to her as Allison in Allison and Lillia/Mizuki in Mokke). It is fun to hear her as Fate from Nanoha while one of her songs are playing as well. :P

    OtaAgg:

    @ theBigN
I agree w/ you about Mizuki Nana having bad anime roles XD I think she has quite a number of amusing roles in her repetoire
    @ j1m0ne
I LOVE YOUR WRITING!!! I LOVE YOUR MATERIAL!!! PLEASE DON’T PUT YOURSELF DOWN LIKE THAT!!! (Oh, I like hashihime’s blog too, I check both blogs on a daily basis XD) Please know that you bring a little bit of happiness (no matter how perverted, yuri yuri, or seemingly outrageous it may be) to our boring lives!

If hashihime was a round thing in your face, j1mOne would get sprung. ;)

I suppose you are endorsing hashihime’s blog so I guess I will take a look, having not heard of it till now. Then again you aren’t linking to it 19 times, so SEO you fail it.

    j1m0ne:

Whoops, I didn’t know people would be paying attention to another one of my drunken ramblings *hic*

And m(_ _;)m ゴメン!! Hashihime, I never intended to offend you or implicate you as a Nana hater or anything.

(。´Д⊂) ウワァァァン!! Now everyone either hates my guts, or loves me even more ヾ(@°▽°@)ノ My ego is stoked.

@j1m0ne: No I don’t hate you or love you more…I just feel like stalking you more..
    *evil grin*
Then again blogging is a very subjective matter so you can’t really compare your blog to anyone’s blog…it’s up to the reader to decide whose blog they want to read really. And yes, what I said probably does not make sense because I’m typing this down at 7.30am and my brain doesn’t function fully until 12pm XD.

    ANON CONFESSES:

I lurk around blogs that discuss seiyuu, and… Okay, I think I’m the one who searched for “Why people hate Mizuki Nana” yesterday and somehow your blog showed up? I’m a Nana fan, but just wanted to know the kind of negative responses she gets. I wanted to read some critics on her but couldn’t find any on the net. I read about the “Why people hate Hirano Aya”, though, and thought perhaps there’ll be one on Nana too? Well, I certainly got what I searched for now since you posted some five reasons why people hate her. Funny how things work.

    cheers.

LMAO. I certainly didn’t expect you to return to this blog (●´ω`●) I feel like a retard now -_-

  15. 15
    ANON:

lol. Unpredictability in life makes it interesting. Anyway, since the comment thread is beginning to sound like a Hirano vs Nana (or rather, Hirano fans vs Nana fans) I’d like to say that I like Hirano(’s voice), but really dislike some of her more extreme (rabid) fans. They can’t take any form of criticism on Hirano.

They comment on Youtube on her live that the reason for her (obvious) off key singing is because she’s nervous, tired, or playing the guitar at the same time. And then I see Nana running around the stage, jumping and shouting and still able to sing in tune after the 20th song. Of course, to be fair, Hirano would need to build up her live experiences, but I wish the fanboys would admit that she has lots of room for improvement if she wants to continue in this line. Hirano, like Nana, is a pretty good performer, though. They both know how to work the audience.

As for Nana fans, I admit there’s a lot of bias from my side since I’m a fan myself, so I mostly agree to the complimenting comments on youtube. I haven’t read/found any real critics aside from the few “omg her outfit sucks” or “omg she’s so ugly” etc.

However, recently I stumbled across a Chinese Nana fanclub forum, where a member posted a topic asking other fans their “Very first opinion of Nana”. There were the usual predictable comments saying “Very powerful voice!” and “Awesome live!” but amidst those, many of the fans said that their first impression of Nana was that she had ugly teeth, or that she’s too plain-looking(to the point of ugly), but they grew to like her singing.

  16. 16
    houkoholic:

I find it funny that hashihime said that Nana-chan fans tends to be touchy, implying that they are defensive? If anything just from the comments here alone pretty much everyone has displayed complete rationality when it comes to Nana-chan - most of us Nana-chan fans can even agree that she has sucky anime roles/or are in sucky anime (thankfully it’s changed somewhat recently), and we certainly criticises her music regularly, and don’t even get us started on her costumes in concerts. XD I’ve rarely seen any Hirano Aya fans displaying this kind of objectiveness otoh.

Secondly, about the music genre that people like Nana and Minorin goes for. As a matter of fact both of them are considered otaku/anime orientated songs, whereas the pock-rock style of Hirano Aya is much more mainstream (there are a lot of pock-rock singers and bands in Japan, I’m sure j1m0ne can point out a few). So that is also another head-scratcher for me.

My blog needs endoursement, otherwise I’m going to be stuck forever in 3rd place. T_T

    townberry:

Ahh cool the why I love/hate Mizuki Nana thing :P
In the mean time her new single is out…and since I don’t wanna spam j1m0ne’s blog :P just go to my blog for the link to the cd. I forgot the link lol….

@j1m0ne: Btw, I found a great solution to your problem. Wanna make your blog more refine? Blog moar about Hoc-chan XD.
    *me runs away*

  18. 18
    ANON:

Last comment from me, lol. On Nana, what I can’t stand about her are mostly her performing outfits. (costumes) The first time I saw her live, she was wearing a really horrible outfit - which I can’t remember because it was too horrible - but I endured it for her singing. Every artist (no matter which country) has one or two horrible outfits in their live(s), though.

As for her singing, I like Nana’s voice fine, but she doesn’t really have a unique singing voice that gets appeal from the masses. Think artists like Ayaka when I say ‘unique’. She makes up for her lack of a “special voice” by her strong vocals and vibrato and the fact that her live are almost mostly perfect. That’s the real selling point for me since I greatly admire artists who can perform well on live (or better) like they do on the CD. However, her strong vocals tend to be too powerful (sounds like she’s shouting in some) in her more upbeat songs, and it makes some parts sound like it’s going to drift off key. I then cringe and prepare for Nana to sing out of tune, though it never comes. This kinds of spoils the performance for me.

Her songs also have some of the weirdest arrangements I’ve ever heard. Again, they make me think that she’s singing off key. One example I can think right off my head is the song “Replay Machine”.

  19. 19
    j1m0ne:

….woah, deep discussion! Ah, it’s so true that Nana’s live outfits are terrible. I can design & sew better clothes. I estimate that 35% of her songs suck especially the older ones where her vibrato was running wild. Nana’s voice isn’t the type I’m normally into (I’m more into the fragile, delicate ones like Shibata Jun, Kumaki Anri & RYTHEM) but her lives are always so impressively spot on when you compare it to all the shitty stuff I hear on TV sometimes (can anybody say Kawase Tomoko)

I’ve pointed out time & again that Hirano’s style is very mainstream compared to Minorin/Nana, but I’ll just say it again - what music is popular amongst anime otaku (think IDOLM@STER) is NOT popular amongst the general population, where gay boybands & rap/soul/r’n'b are the order of the day.

OK so Nana may be compared to someone like Hamasaki Ayumi. But tell me, who apart from Ayu is successfully making music that sounds like 90s Eurotrance?

I think Hirano, if she ever made it to something like MUSIC STATION but would be a better fit amongst the popular stuff - think artists like Superfly, Chatmonchy, Ikimonogakari, YUI etc. Who’s the only seiyuu who’s ever been on MUSIC STATION? Shiina Hekiru. And you know what - Hirano’s music career reminds me so much of early Hekiru, where she sold records based purely on who she was rather than the music (which was a similar brand of pop-rock, for those not familiar with her).

I will take this opportunity to link to a post about Hekiru that I read ages ago which kind of documents what I hope will not happen to Hirano in the future: No Make Girl’s On Hekiru’s CD sales and marketing. I hope for Hirano’s sake that her fans’ fire continues to burn brightly 5 years down the road.

And….. I endorse Seiyuu3 again (I think I’ve endorsed the blog a few times before, no?) I even voted for you in the Awards you know :3 I’m sure you’ll be instantly well-known if you make a HIRANO AYA SUXXX! post ^^

*phew* Maybe I should’ve made a separate post for this…

  20. 20
    al:

Nah, Nana-chan fans don’t need to be defensive: her live prowess is all the evidence we need. I think I’ve also read that Chinese forum… I remember the ugly teeth comments! Heehee. I never thought she was pretty either, not for a long time.

To me, hashihime’s an editorial entertainment magazine, while j1m0ne is insightful stand-up comedy. Read both and love both (and yours too, houkoholic!) but I prefer the laughter and lightness of this place. I think if we call entertainment trashy everything seiyuu-related might get implicated.

  21. 21
    Dav:

I agree with townberry that blogging is a subjective matter, and it’s up to the blogger to pen/type down whatever his/her opinions are regardless of what most people may think. Sure, readers may disagree sometimes but they themselves shouldn’t go around judging whether the taste of the blogger/blog content is great or the suxxors because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Which reminded me of a friend of mine who blogged once that he collects dolls (just collecting them, not playing with them), and he was called all sorts of nasty things by many people. Sigh…

Okay, I think I’m sounding rather incoherent at this point. Anyway, I love reading your blog, hashihime’s, and seiyuu3. 3 different styles of writing, occasionally 3 different types of content but all 3 share 1 theme - passion for anything seiyuu, and I think the latter is what counts.

And of course I love how you call fellow Sabahans idiots. Maybe this fact will forever not change, probably the reason why I have a love-hate relationship with my fellow statesmen, and my fellow KK peeps. A couple of friends of mine who work in retail frequently tell me how nearly half of the clients/customers they meet in a single day on a daily basis are complete arses. So… Yaaaay for Sabah! Sabah memang boleh!

  22. 22
    Mei:

Hirano — Good Acting, is Pretty, Poor Singing
Mizuki — Good Acting, not Pretty, Good Singing

Minorin — Poor (read: Average) Acting, is Pretty, Good Singing

Or something like that? (Last one is for balance.. and out of fangirling.) No one’s good at everything, especially if you excel at one particular thing. It’s like how Aya has particularly skilled acting nuances, Mizuki has expert control on her vocal cords, and Minorin is good at looking pretty.

    PS: If seiyuu3 keeps up the event reports, they’re golden. I’m always looking to them for the dish on the latest seiyuu concert and what have you, but the lack of endeavors has left me in despair lately. D;

  23. 23

Sabah is full of idiots, though most of them aren’t actually from Sabah. They’re the ones we send home by the boatload but they still keep on coming back LOL.

Actually, I like both Mizuki Nana & Hirano Aya. Everyone is unique!! Nothing can be compared about.

    houkoholic:

    > Mei
Sorry about the lack of reports, we’re still going to concerts, just that I can only write about how awesome Nana/Yukarin/Minorin is live so many times before even *I* get sick of hearing and writing about it. XD I phail as a fanboi……

That said, there’s a couple of different events coming up - the Idolmaster concert and Animelo, so I’ll try to cover these since it will have some different artists to write about.

    >j1m0ne
    Thanks for the endorsement.
I was writing something about Nana-chan’s latest costume FAILURE in her Live Fighter concert, so maybe if I name it why Mizuki Nana SUXORSS I’ll get some hits! But it sort of got left hanging….

Plus you knew this was going to turn into a fanboi fight! It’s all part of your evil plan!

  26. 26
    rain:

It’s derailed even more by including Minorin. What’s innocent Minorin got to do with the topic at hand? XD

  27. 27
    Vness:

I love both of your blogs. You both find awesome things about seiyuu and take the time to share them with the folks here who don’t know Japanese (and some who do). But what I think separates this blog from Hashihime’s is your sense of humor. I LOL every time you make a joke about a seiyuu or pics from blogs that you find.

    >rain: Yeah, leave Minorin out of this!

  28. 28
    savofenno:

Mizuki Nana is not PUSAIKU! She`s Ribon no Kishi!
And Hirano Aya is MEGAMI! I`m worried only how her guitar
playing is developing. She should continue with her Fender Mustang, not fool around with some wide-neck Gibson ES-335! For Nana, Don`t forget Shichi-nin no Nana, or Shinobuden.
What you like hasn`t to be everything in same mould.
    How boring that would be.

  29. 29
    townberry:

No…Hirano Aya shouldn’t even be fiddling around with instruments when she cannot even get the most basic instrument correct; her voice. Holding her voice for few extra seconds at the end of a verse is fine. Holding her voice and doing weird vibrato is not fine. >.<
    @Mei: What? Nana-chan’s not pretty?! Lol…she’s…quite….alright…imho. Minorin is yummy…but yes..I can’t stand her voice sometimes…Talk girl! I can’t hear you!!!
Everytime I listen to her interviews I will think as if I turned deaf or something…I can’t freaking here a thing…Does kinda get annoying…and her roles are quite repetitive. Quiet, soft, secluded type. Someone, give Minorin a loud ojou-can role XD

  30. 30
    Emily:

(you are so mocking me for saying Mizuki Nana “yodels” lol. ok ok so it’s a “vibrato” *shoots self* xD)

I can say that I don’t really like either Nana Mizuki or Aya Hirano that much. Both of their music is ok to me, but neither are really my taste.

Hashihime’s blog uses words like “idiosyncratic.” j1m0ne has comparisons like “-If Hashihime was Brazilian Pudding-flavoured Pocky (which is bloody awesome), j1m0ne would be a manky Mapo Tofu-flavoured Pretz (yes it exists)”.

    ^^;;

  31. 31
    j1m0ne:

I AM TEH EVIL. I am rounding up all the Nana fans to mass brawl & crush Aya fans MWAHAHAHAH. But no Aya fans seem to be reading this so the plan isn’t working well LOL.

I never thought Nana was pretty, but that was never meant to be the main part of her appeal anyway.

And yeah, lol at Minorin the innocent bystander.

Life is too short (and my brain is too small) for me to contemplate the usage of words as big as ‘idosyncratic’. Besides, I’m thick as a plank IRL despite having an economics degree (it’s true). And yes, I’m mocking you Emily BWAHAHAYODELEEOOHAHAHA.

  32. 32
    danie~:

LOL, I had to search for that word in dictionary.
I agree that Nana wore the weirdest costumes live (Live Formula’s metallic wonder woman thingy and the green.. cabbage.. in Take A Chance), but 16,000 people still went crazy for her because as a singer she PWNS. I still think she’s very cute though.
I still liked Aya back then when I watched Gekisou, where she looked pretty in good outfits, but that DVD struck me that she can’t sing all that well. Animelo 07 settled it, as she was the only artist I skipped in the DVD.
@ j1m0ne: Well, you don’t get Ayatard readers because you blog about seiyuu in general.. Most Aya fans I know (I know a lot since Aussie is still stuck on Haruhi), ONLY know/care about her, and all other seiyuu shall not exist. They can’t even name “top 6 seiyuu” (the top 5 are SOS-Dan members).

  33. 33
    hashihime:

A lovely, friendly conversation. We can all just enjoy what we enjoy and try other stuff to try to get the good from it. I think that “weird vibrato” of Aya’s that townberry referred to is musically meaningful, but whatever. I’d rather Aya followed Shiina Ringo than Shiina Hekiru. Actually, I listen to Onitsuka Chihiro and even Hayami Saori more than either Aya or Nana. And like others here, I voted for this blog, too. So much fun, even when our tastes differ.

  34. 34
    Misako:

I was linked to this blog from hashihime’s, which is a blog I read because I have similar taste in anime, although I don’t watch much of it. Plus, everything is well written, so I can read all of it. Most blogs I just skim. Anyway, I like both Mizuki Nana and Hirano Aya, although I prefer Mizuki Nana’s music because it’s well done, although not something I usually want to hear a lot of. I became a fan of Hirano Aya after her role as Reira, which I thought she did rather well. Then I watched some more of her animes, and I think she’s rather good. I’m no expert. My favorite song of hers is Unnamed World, too bad they left it off the album.

  35. 35
    chanpon:

Some reasons I don’t like Mizuki Nana (hate may be too strong of a word, though “find her annoying” is totally appropriate). Picture plastered everywhere so I had high expectations of her talent - watched a few anime shows with her and …*ugh*….found her characters always irritating or useless or both. Her acting wasn’t great either. Heard she was a great singer so I listened to one of her songs. (=_=) Lordy…THAT’s good singing?? She’s better than a lot of seiyuu, but good god, have you people listened to seiyuu sing? Most suck beyond the lowest levels of suckiness. It’s not saying much for her that she can out-sing many seiyuu. And then all the posts that she’s cute…hmm..different standards I guess. I personally hate the whole act and sometimes dress like your five, uber-kawaii = ideal girl fantasy. These are not women. (Yes, I’m talking to you, Horie Yui and Tamura Yukari). It’s completely off-putting. So chalk me up as one who “doesn’t get her” and her popularity either.

Hirano Aya’s over-exposure is killing any goodwill she built up with me for her strong performance as Suzumiya Haruhi. She’s a terrible singer, but I think she does look cute (even with overdone pouty duck lips). She just needs to hide in a cave for 3 years, learn to challenge her vocals, and she could come back really strong.
