Fix my teeth….or not?

Basically, every time I’ve been to the dentist in the last 12 years I’ve been implored to get braces because of the sorry state of my teeth, being told that ‘it actually helps give a good impression in job interviews!’, ‘you’ll and the such. Actually I don’t think it makes much difference since my current job doesn’t require me to open my mouth for longer than 15 minutes per month. And I really don’t care at all what they look like, otherwise I’d have gotten it fixed ages ago. I guess it’s an Asian thing to not be concerned by how straight or white my teeth are.

Having said that I do know of the potential trouble I might have somewhere down the line, my jaw is terribly overcrowded with teeth as it is and my solitary wisdom tooth is buried under my gums. I had a grand plan to make all my teeth rotten before I turn 50 by eating a diet of sherbet candy and not brushing at all but I figured I’d probably die of diabetes before it could happen. But I guess for the moment I’m putting the braces plan on the backburner since it’s i) expensive ii) troublesome & annoying.

See that – my teeth. So obviously I have no right to laugh at other people’s teeth when mine are so fugly :3 But of course looking at Japanese people’s canines & molars make me feel much better about mine… I think. Actually, mine are worse -_-;;

…I probably wouldn’t attempt to guess which set of teeth belongs to which seiyuu. I know I couldn’t (cos I compiled the whole thing without labeling it and realised that I couldn’t identify more than half).

  • …Scarily I think I found Nana-chan’s teeth picture among all those. Anyway, you should really fix it if it’s overcrowded with one tooth buried under your gum. My friend had a similar case but it started hurting badly before she got her braces…so yeah, I recommend you to fix them. Besides you have dental plans (I guess) so go do it!

  • Yea, it does seem to be a rather Asian thing to not bother with braces, though around the time I had mine on it wasn’t too uncommon to see metal mouths around (I had the same opinion as you about how bothersome and expensive they were, but I had a ’surprise’ molar that started growing from UNDER the few teeth I had that WERE in order which left me with no choice but to pull a few out and slap on them braces >.<) But that was back home in Malaysia, hardly see them at all in Japan.

    enjoy a world of pain if you use braces now. Unless you’re adamant about it (with a purpose like for appearance or for health) then don’t do it, it’s going to hurt so much for the first weeks that you can’t eat. And depending on how bad it is (or was it your jaw size, I forgot) you might have to remove a few teeth before you have your braces, and then there’s a lot of food you can’t eat until you get your retainers.

    fucking.
    sucks.

    Maybe it’s because I’m an American and had to suffer through a retainer in about 3rd grade, but, perhaps braces aren’t such a bad idea. But the wisdom tooth sounds like it might be a bigger priority. Has your dentist said anything about it. Of course, getting those two removed wasn’t pleasant either (couldn’t eat much harder than filet mignon for about a week, and I periodically took ibuprofin pills half an inch long for the residual pain).

  • Braces are a pain in the ass. I finally got my braces off after 4 freaking years, but I still have to wear a retainer now.

    First, you would have to extract some teeth to make space. It’s usually 4, but it depends on the individual. After the extraction and putting on of the braces, your entire mouth will hurt for days. The stuff that they put on your molars will scratch the insides of your mouth till it bleeds, and your teeth will feel the pain due to tension. I couldn’t eat properly for 2-3 days before the pain eventually subsided a little.

    Also, I could eat hard stuff like apples, fearing that the braces would come loose and fall out. Mine fell out once when I tried eating a corn >_>

  • Yeah braces absolutely suck. They really hurt in the beginning and you can’t eat this food or that food. I also had to use a headset thing and one point and I walked around looking like some nerdy alien for 3 months.

    I think getting Invisalgin is a lot easier because a). it’s retainers and b). it’s invisble so people can’t tell :) . But Invisalign is really quite expensive…

  • Another Asian who never got braces here. As I got into my mid to late teens, I worried about it some, but now I’m back to not caring. My teeth are crooked, but they’re not monstrous, so whatever. :D

  • I told you dat braces hurt, but I got rid of my lolfang thanks to dat. :P But yeah I guess you better get one before it hurts you more.

    Juz curious, did you put Minorin there? I only recognised these (in random order):
    - Mizuki Nana (lol <3)
    - Shiraishi Ryoko
    - Toyosaki Aki
    - Koshimizu Ami
    - Imai Asami
    - Shimoda Asami
    - Nakahara Mai
    - Nonaka Ai
    - Iizuka Mayumi
    - Nogawa Sakura

    Another Asian without braces here, but my teeth are odd. Like, according to my dentist, I’m missing like, 5 or 6 adult teeth so I still have some of my baby teeth around. I am also an evolved human being! For I have no wisdom teeth, lol.

    Wow Danie, you are creepy to actually recongnize those…Then again, I think I might see Ono Daisuke’s and I think probably Sugita’s as well up there, but I’m probably wrong.

  • I got my braces when I was younger, and well, my teeth look a lot better than they did before I got my braces.

    I mean, if you can afford it I think it’s totally worth it. It’s easier to brush straight teeth, so it lowers your chance of getting tooth decay or any other nasty oral disease. Oh, and I was really really slim while I had my braces XD I bloated 10 lbs after I had them taken off. =_=

    Mind you, its harder to have your teeth removed when they’re all jagged and crowded too. So should you ever need to pull any teeth out, you would save your dentist (and probably yourself) a world of pain.

    Just my two bits. ^^

  • j1m0ne

    Oh yeah I need to pull out 4 teeth if I get them, forgot to mention that. And pain doesn’t bother me at all, it’s really the regular visits to the dentists and the 2-year period that are annoying. Though everyone who’s had them seems to be comparing the pain to having a nuclear bomb hit their teeth, hah.

    @danie
    Er yes Minorin is to the left of Nana ^^;

    @Nis
    Actually you’re very right. The rough list is here if you really want to positively ID them all.

  • I heard gov’t servants get free or at least greatly discounted prices on any dental care. But if you aren’t one you probably don’t care xD

  • Erin

    Go without ‘em if you don’t need ‘em–that’s what I say! Of course, the orthodontist I went to in junior high wanted to chop off a half-inch to an inch of my (apparently freakishly huge) tongue. I don’t remember much else besides suddenly becoming very aware of the fact that I really didn’t care if I had straight teeth, after all…

  • I never had braces but think you should have one…
    Me no want to see my J1m0ne-sama’s image being spoiled T_T

    Apparently, seems like most of the commenter here wore braces -_-”

  • @Nis: I’m creepy yeah :P

    Crap nao I see Yukarin and Kugyu there. And I knew it that missing teeth was Shizuka’s…

    lmao should have given my try when I’m awake. I was actually confusing Minorin / Tomacchan (/ Ono-D) lmfao but then I never really pay attention to Minorin’s/Tomacchan’s teeth whenever I see them. There are, uh, more “obvious” traits. :P

    BTW DAT’S NOT UEDA KANA’S….. and plz tell me Inoue = Kazuhiko not Marina. *shivers*

  • karasu

    D:> my jaw’s huge so I never had to remove any teeth, at least that was the resoning I got for myself (since I didn’t remove any for braces..none, actually, for that matter). The Braces still hurt a lot, and then you have to keep wearing that stupid retainer for a few more years. If regular checkups is your biggest worry then yeah, you’re going to be visiting quite often, usually checkups or fixing the placement of the wire because it’s stabbing at your gums. I completely abandoned the retainer after braces since it was choking me, so it’s a bit skewed now (albeit the whole row of teeth so it’s hard to notice). Just make sure you have the endurance and mentality for it.

  • Btw, getting braces would totally ruin a seiyuu’s job, wouldn’t it? (They’d sound rather different from usual or star bleeding over their scripts) And the only time that really hurt during my run with braces was at the start, where unlike everyone who was on fluids or something my mum just set me up with the usual solid food and it was HELL… but at least the rest of the 2 years went by breezily compared to then -_-”

  • momo

    I had braces for a couple of years but I don’t remember having horrendous pain while wearing them. After each tightening there was maybe 1-2 days where the teeth were sensitive and I couldn’t chomp down but after awhile I got use to it. Also, speaking as an ex-dental assistant I don’t recommend your plan of letting all your teeth rot out because wearing dentures are way worse than properly taking care of your teeth.

  • chanpon

    Damn, I can recognize Koyasu Takehito’s teeth anywhere. Those jumped right out at me. (=_=)

    Correcting teeth isn’t only a cosmetic thing. Your teeth will constantly shift throughout your life time, so even if they are just an annoyance now, they may become problems later if they continue to grow crooked due to crowding. Your dentist should make recommendations based on that, but if s/he’s only offering a cosmetic reason now, then there’s no need to prioritize it if you don’t care to. At the very least you should strongly consider removing your wisdom teeth if they are impacted. That may solve some of the crowding problem.

  • Mei

    I wore braces for about 6 years. Torture, right? But I finally got them off. idk, it feels nice to have straight teeth, but such a hassle to have braces, and cleaning takes twice as long.

    If you ever win the lottery, put braces somewhere on the list of things to invest on. I’d still advise on it.

  • emdash

    An Asian with braces. I also had to have two teeth extracted before my braces were put on. Like you, I didn’t want braces, but I’m a total convert now!

    Sure it’s expensive, cleaning is a hassle and it hurts for quite a while, but I think they are totally worth it. They way I see it is: braces now >> false teeth in 30 years time. Not to mention all the pain you’d be going through with possible infections you can get from overcrowding because your toothbrush won’t be able to reach some places.

  • Elly

    The only one I immediately recognized was Koyasu XD

    Also, I never wore braces so can’t say much about that. When I was really young my dentist started saying I should wear some just cause my top front teeth are kind of prominent, but I honestly didn’t care about that and luckily my parents didn’t either ^^;

  • LilaChan

    My dentist made me wear braces when I was 10. Well braces in the UK are provided free by the goverment as long as the dentist say you need it, so I was given no choice and my parents said yes to it. Because I wore it when I was young, I only had braces for an year. Wore retainers for another year and a half.

    I had to take out 4 teeth, but only one at a time. Nothing beats my 4 year old experience of taking out 6 teeth in one day

    I only know Nana’s teeth of by heart…the others have straight teeth, it’s impossible to remember ;~;

  • Lil Donkey

    …I could only recognise Amisuke’s. >_>”

    o_O A lot of people here wore or are wearing or are going to wear braces here (hey j1m0ne!) huh…

  • Nis

    Speaking of braces, the other day my friend took out his braces but he didn’t need a retainer at all. Now that I think back, back when he first got braces, he didn’t seem like he was in too much pain and was eating mostly fine except for random times he’d get his braces caught on something and have to go to the washroom to somehow fish it back out.

  • Vness

    Hey, at least you don’t have Koyasu’s teeth. Those things give me nightmares!

    Having lived with someone who had worn braces for almost a year, it really does greatly improve the condition of one’s teeth. One your teeth are fixed, you’ll soon forget about how bad they once looked (unless you look at some old photos).

  • jackie

    they hurt like hell plus u should get them when u r young not old what is the point

  • It is a personal decision, but if you really wish to have your teeth straightened then I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t try having braces.
