Kyoran Kazoku Nikki Radio
So the new season’s finally kicked off, and I’ve checked out a few shows but nothing’s truly set my world on fire as yet. Chi’s Sweet Home is the best anime this season, hands down. But that’s not what I’m here to talk about anyway. The anime radio shows are starting their run too, which means oodles of fun for me as as I yawn my way through hours of seiyuu rambling and talking about a lot of boring things so it’s my job to separate the wheat from the chaff. Kicking things off this week are the two Kyoran Kazoku Nikki radio shows.
Susume! Kyoran Denpa Nikki

The main Bandai Visual/Lantis-sponsored runs on Cho!A&G! and is hosted by Fujimura Ayumi & Sato Rina. It was the first time either of them have done a live radio broadcast and it was pretty obvious - both seemed lost at times throughout the hour-long show. First episode has been uploaded on Nico Nico Douga, goodness knows if further shows will be though.
In between reading listener mails, Sato & Fujimura played a bizarre Kyoran Kazoku Nikki-themed Game of Life boardgame (see above), with a 罰ゲーム (punishment game) awaiting the loser. Like LIFE, the different coloured squares correspond to different events - earning money, building up a family etc.
Now the game, like Kyoran itself, was really weird - for example, everytime they landed on a yellow square, they’d have to pick a card from the yellow pile (the 子作り pile) and ‘conceive’ a child, often via incredibly strange methods. Note the fact that more than half of the board consisted of yellow squares ^^; Ayumi got a card that read something like:
桜が綺麗なので、お花見をすることに。夜桜が綺麗だな・・・そして、子供が出来た。
Translation: The sakuras are beautiful, (so you) decide to go on a ohanami. Ah, the night cherry blossoms are beautiful…and (unto you) a child is born.
Rina got a few that were even stupider:
肩こりがひどいので、整体に行く。肩こりがなくなった代わりに、子供生まれちゃった。
Translation: (You have) severely stiff shoulders, so (you) go for a massage. In return for having loosened-up shoulders, you give birth to a child.
宅配便で、大きな荷物が届いた。女性一人では運べないので、家の中までお兄さんに運んでもらうことに。そして子供が出来た。
Translation: A large baggage arrives for you via home delivery. (As a girl, you) can’t carry it by yourself, so you get (the?) onii-san to bring it in for you. And then, a child is born (unto you).
So far, so WTF.
The green squares were ‘happening’, or event spots. One of the events was ‘It’s the kids’ sports day! Perform squats equal to the number of children you have’. So poor Fujimura Ayumi had to do six squats in the studio. Wearing a short skirt.
There was also a Moe Voice Battle segment where Sato & Fujimura had to appeal to listeners to vote for them in their moe-est voice possible. The funny part was that they only gave around 5 minutes for people to mail in their votes and when they announced the results you could hear them saying “5″ and “3″ in the background, so I guess….only 8 people listened to the show?
Anyway, at the end of it all, Sato Rina was the loser and had to do one of those モノマネ罰ゲーム (imitation games). But before she could do that, they started playing MOSAIC.WAV’S 最強○×計画 (Saikyo Marubatsu Keikaku) - absolutely fantastic! If you know the lyrics of the song, you’ll see that it ties in with the theme of the day’s radio show well - baby-making and all that stuff. I think was the part of the show that made me laugh the most anyway.
Oh, and Rina’s punishment was to ‘imitate’ the sound of giving birth to the number of children she ‘conceived’ during the LIFE board game - which amounted to 17 (LOL). And since her character in the anime is a jellyfish (see below), she did these odd…wobbly sounds? What the heck is a jellyfish giving birth(?) supposed to sound like anyway?

Overall, the show was slightly above average I thought - an hour seemed just too long a timespan for them to fill. It was amusing in parts but my attention was drifting in and out; I hope they think of some more interesting corners, and quickly. The source material has so much potential for craziness that it’d be a shame if they didn’t take full advantage of it.
Kyoran Kazoku Keikaku

Apparently, at the recent TAF Festival the seiyuu joked about forming a ‘males-only’ radio show and so they got their wish. The three males of the show (TK aka Kondo Takayuki, Yasumoto Hiroki & Fujita Yoshinori) combine to bring you an internet radio show called Kyoran Kazoku Keikaku. Except that they didn’t get to record in a studio, instead being consigned to a small room which had no chairs. They only got 5 minutes for the first episode and it ended before they even read any mail or did anything useful -_- Towards the end of the show, there was the sound of lots of footsteps coming from the room above the one the trio were in; which made them wonder if there was an athletic meet upstairs… but it was a fun show. If a bit too short.

If there’s a plus point about Kyoran Kazoku Nikki apart from the insanity, it’s the cast. The drama CD gives me a bit of hope for the show when it hits 12 April; let’s hope it’s as funny as it could potentially be. If you haven’t heard the CD, here’s the cast talk to give you an idea of what to expect.
Hanazawa Kana, Tomatsu Haruka and Hirohashi Ryo are all ♥♥♥♥♥
Other radio shows I’ve been listening to, and will cover in some form: Kanokon, kure-nai, MACROSS○※△ & To Love-Ru, with Kamen no Maid Guy, Amatsuki and Toshokan Senso to come. Sadly Druaga doesn’t have a radio show (as yet). I actually loved the first episode(s) and would love to hear KENN hosting.

Lol @ the game and the baby-conceiving methods. Really have to catch Kyoran when it gets out.

[...] I’m probably not gonna cover the anime every week since there’s a few others (Omni etc) doing so and besides, nobody comes to this blog for my non-existant anime writeups, right? Will keep up with the radio show though, it’s my main interest after all. Coverage of first radio episode was here. [...]
