Plenty of highlights, including the fact that Rinyan and Minorin (also on guitar) sang the stupid birthday song for Marina that they also sang for Minori last time. But wait! The biggest highlight for me has got to be the fact that the birthday message I sent in for Marina was read (cue hysterical laughter). More on that later.

Being the dead of winter with snow these few weeks in parts of Japan, the birthday party had a nabe (hotpot) theme. So after Marina came in and the other two sang their song, it was time to sit down and read a few of the boatload of birthday messages that were sent in.

OK let me explain a little now. Back in December the Minakike staff/website was asking for fans to send birthday messages for Marina-san in advance as the recording of the show usually took place a bit earlier than the actual big day itself, so they were probably hoping to get some time to sift through all those mails and choose the best ones. Now, I’ve never actually sent in any mail to any internet anime radio show before cos….well…. I haven’t a clue what to say at all without sounding like an absolute idiot. That, and my written Japanese skills are on the ’shit’ end of the spectrum.

Having been kinda annoyed at missing an opportunity to wish Minorin many happy returns of the day (since we share the same birthday) , I wrote one this time for Marina without giving it too much thought. I typed it up in 5 minutes flat complete with bad grammar and rotten kanji and just emailed it off. Didn’t think too much about it for the last 6 weeks or so, in fact I’d completely forgotten that I had followed up the birthday message with a general question.

So I tuned in today and after the first 3-4 mails I was like, Hey….. guess they didn’t pick mine after all. Of course, I was pretty surprised when I heard my ‘name’ being read out. In fact, I was laughing my head off almost. It was pretty surreal really. I think Minorin, Rina and Marina must’ve secretly thought I was a weirdo nerd or something…. Anyway, just the bit where they read my message below:

C:This is from j1m0ne-san!
All:Welcome!
C:Inoue-san, Happy Birthday!
I:Thank you very much!
C:Wishing that the year ahead of you is a wonderful one!
I/S:Mmm, yeah.
C:I’m actually pretty close to Marina in age (Hey, they cut out the bit where I said my birthday was on the same day as Minorin’s, boooooo)
I:Mmmmm.
C:By the way, I’m not Japanese. I’m actually Malaysian… and I’m a girl.
I/S(in background): Ooh/Eehh?
C:I’m sure all of you know by now how the number of overseas seiyuu fans is increasing (I’m one of them). What do you guys think about this? PS Sorry for my horrible Japanese.
S:No way!
C:Hey, it (my Japanese) is pretty good!
I:Even used ‘kakko’ properly.
C:Yeah, so she did!
I:Incredible…..the nabe tastes good!
S/C:So it does!
C:But really, the fan letters we get from overseas….really, they’ve started increasing! It surprises me!
(something in the background I can’t quite hear)
S:And everyone’s (referring to gaijin) Japanese is so good!
All:Agreed, it’s good….surprisingly good!
I:I mean, if you just read sentences (words) you won’t understand a single thing….it’s incredible. But I think, the number of people who learn Japanese so that they can understand anime has increased lately. (It doesn’t actually apply to me, I learnt Japanese purely because I was bored, and cos Chinese was too hard for me to learn on my own. HAHA)
S:Yeah.
I:Please have more pride in yourself!
S/C:And try your best!
I:Thank you!

Ack, translating dialogue that’s all over the place, and with three people talking at the same time is kinda hard…..

I think the fact that I’d put in the subject of the email something like 井上さんへの誕生日お祝いメッセ－ジ (マレーシアのファンから) [A birthday message for Inoue-san, from a Malaysian fan] got it on the show, lol. The staff ended up chopping and changing around what I originally wrote, but ah well. At least I got to hear Minorin say j1m0ne ^_^ I’ll now go record that bit, loop it and make it into a rap song called j1m0ne Rulez!!! or something like that. And oh, this whole thing kinda reminds me of a post a long while ago by Jupiterstar about his own mail on KimiNozo radio. I feel kinda giggly now - and that sums up my 1 minute and 22 seconds of fame. Woot!
