Previewing Mizuki Nana’s DISCOTHEQUE…
I foresee a lot of people hating this! DISCOTHEQUE is like CUTIE HONEY & Cat’s Eye mashed with Morning Musume and that is going to kill all the fans who only got into Nana in her Elements Garden phase. Plus, she uses her cutesy high-pitched voice here, which is an er…acquired taste. Personally, I don’t mind the song that much - it’s about 60,000 times better than COSMIC LOVE at least. I see Nana didn’t sing DISCOTHEQUE at Animelo.. actually, she ended up singing four of my not-so-favourite songs (Zankou no Gaia, Pray, Dancing in the velvet moon & ETERNAL BLAZE) so I don’t feel bad about not getting my arse over to Japan for the show.

From your description I’m very afraid to watch the clip right now…

Eheh… it’s not painful to listen to, but it doesn’t suit her.

Personally, I actually like the melody… it sounds like Mizuki Nana’s producers were majorly influenced by some old-school hip-hop groups/emcees (the Treacherous Three, Spoonie Gee, Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Cold Crush Brothers and Fearless Four come to mind… I also hear a little bit of James Brown, Grady Tate, B-Side, Fab 5 Freddy and Waterbed Kev in there). The only thing that could have made it better is if Nana had been able to get permission from Big Daddy Kane to sample that part of “Set It Off” where he says “discotheque.” (and it’s a clean one, too. But, then again, I’m pretty sure that Mizuki’s never listened to a single REAL rap song in her life (and, no, MOVE rhyming over last year’s Animelo theme doesn’t count).)
But I do have to agree with everyone here that it DEFINITELY isn’t her style. IMO, she’s better with the smooth/sexy/romantic-style tracks, since they more nicely accommodate her regular, natural lower-pitched voice. I’d have to give this one a 3.5 out of 5.

Well, i kinda like it actually, it’s quite refreshing, and I must agree that it’s way way better than Cosmic love! This song actually reminds me a bit of the days back when I was playing Space Channel 5 at my friends house. I can’t wait for 1st OCT !!!!

@Shadowlite:
That’s good to know. It all depends on people’s tastes… it UN-FREAKING-QUESTIONABLY supersedes “Cosmic Love,” but I REALLY don’t think that it’s anywhere near the quality of Nana’s older records, such as “PROTECTION,” for instance.
And, “Space Channel 5…” oh, God, I LOVED that game. Any title which stars Michael Jackson is automatically pure WIN. So many great memories. I also like to watch him kick other characters’ butts in Mugen nowadays, too. ^_^
I cannot wait for “DISCOTHEQUE” to come out, either, seeing as how it’s gonna be released six days before my 16th birthday (I live in Florida, so I’m on U.S. Eastern standard time).

I like this.
It’s good to mix it up, as long as it’s not like Cosmic Love :3

@omo:
Same here. It is nice to know that Mizuki Nana’s toying around with different styles now (I NEVER would have guessed that she’d be influenced by the classic, traditional disco sound). Oh, what the heck… I didn’t give this song enough credit in the first place.
I’m going to score it a 4 out of 5 now.

@anytypeofway:
And to add to that, I wouldn’t mind a new Space Channel 5 game with Nana in it as Ulala
I would buy a console just for that. HAHAHAH !!!

@Shadowlite:
Me neither. Personally, I think that Sega should (and really COULD) bring back their Dreamcast… the technology is STILL on par with a lot of consoles nowadays (it WAS the first 128-bit one, after all), and it can continue to hold its own among today’s greats. I’d love to hear Mizuki Nana as Ulala too, IMO… that would be nothing but a total blessing for my eardrums to behold and appreciate. <:-)
But then you’d have to call it “Space Channel 6.” And, instead of Michael Jackson, I personally think that Biz Markie should be the space dude. Space Biz… kind of slips off the tongue like grease, doesn’t it? ^_^

Sigh…you gotta remind me of animelo 2008…and how I missed out in watching Nana-chan, Minorin and ultimately Hoc-chan’s first Kurobara big performance. And to top it off, I can’t bloody watch the video in my office because they blocked video streaming.
I’m gonna go hide under my office desk and sulk now.

lol this song wasn’t all high pitched cutey voice, the latter mid part (arund 1:30) sounded normal to me. Well, that’s just me =] Demo, that cutesy voice was good too. I dun think many singers can last through one whole song with that kinda pitch. x)

Eh, I love it. I like Nana’s cute voice
…and if I can come to like Anone mamimume mogacho, sure I’d love to have this song on my playlist. And you’re right, it’s much better than Cosmic Love.

This song is definetly a different type from what Nana usually use to sing, but its nice to see her sing though. Can’t wait for her new single on Oct 1st. I heard that they are going to premier Trickster next week on Smile Gang. Haha Can’t wait for that too!!

I’m not a fan of her cutesy voice since I’m so in love with the more “natural” Nana, but since I do enjoy (more like have fun with) Ano ne ~mamimume mogacho~, I think this one will grow on me. And I also encourage trying new styles. Btw I can’t wait to hear this song live, it’s strange that no one point this out, but the bass lines rule xD.
If I had to say one negative comment, the background chorus singing “discotheque” comes out a little too stupid in my opinion.

Ooooo … I saw the CM of the trickster album, I cant wait to see the PV of discotheque !!! so CUTE !!!!
hahahaha and so old school!!! I gonna love it !!!
