Teaching Chihara Minori Malay (the Chinese way)

It’s great that Chihara Minori is making an effort to learn some Malay before coming to DaiCon in July, but I think the book she bought is kinda useless.

See: 「こんにちは。私の名前は実里です。」 (Hello my name is Minori) somehow translates to「スラマッ プタン ナマ サヤ ミノリ」—> SARAMA- PUTAN NAMA SAYA MINORI which I assume is actually supposed to be ‘Selamat petang nama saya Minori’ (Good afternoon my name is Minori)….. uhhhh, Konnichiwa got lost in translation!!!

or how「日本から来ました。」 (I’m from Japan) becomes 「サヤ ダリ ジュブン」 —-> SAYA DARI JUBUN…. uh romanization is farked. It’s actually ‘Saya (datang) dari Jepun’.

So after a bit of brainstorming with (mostly) townberry, we figured we could teach Minorin some useful phrases and sentences to describe her life. I’m thinking most people won’t understand a thing here as most of it refers to specific Minorin happenings (especially through her blog). I also apologise profusely for the liberal usage of market Malay/bahasa rojak and the fact that I hail from Sabah, one of the only states that speaks Bahasa Baku – though I must stress I did achieve an A1 in my SPM Bahasa Malaysia.

Apa khabar, nama saya Minorin
(Hello, my name is Minorin)

Sudikah anda berkongsi kuburan dengan saya?
(Will you share a grave with me?)

Harga berapa si anjing dalam tingkap itu?
(How much is dat doggy in the window?)

Patutkah saya menyelamatkan kura-kura dari pot itu?
(Should I save the tortoises from the pot?)

Apakah cara untuk mengurangkan kegemukan mukaku?
(Is there a way to make my fat face smaller?)

Saya punya peti sejuk rosak hingga cafe au lait pun mau kasih sejuk di veranda
(My fridge is so broken I have to cool my cafe au lait on the veranda)

Jangan lupa keluarkan lens kontak mata dari kotaknya sebelum dibuang
(Don’t forget to remove the contact lenses before throwing the box away)

Saya mendapati bahawa alat kawalan jauh bukanlah begitu penting. kalau hilang 2 minggu pun tidak ada rasa
(I found out that remote controls aren’t that important. Even if I lose it for 2 weeks I don’t feel anything)

Bila cuba servis keretapi baru, sila pastikan anda telah tiba di stesen yang dikehendaki sebelum menurun
(When trying a new train service, please make sure you have arrived at the desired station before you alight)

Saya tidak sepatutnya menjampi kakak-kakak saya pergi mati (hint: Minamike wrong no. of fingers)
(I should not curse my sisters to die)

Saya suka makan lobak putih
(I like eating daikons)

Pastikan katak-katak diletakkan di tempat selamat, siapa tahu ada gempa bumi berlaku nanti kakinya semua patah
(Please ensure the frogs are kept in a safe place or else when there’s an earthquake its legs will break)

Saya tidak sepatutnya makan roti yang telah dibakar hingga hangus. Kemungkinan dapat kanser sangat tinggi.
(I should not consume burnt toast, the chances of getting cancer are high)

Cerek emas ini harga berapa? Yang hari tu saya kasih bakar yang plastik punya
(How much for this golden kettle? I just burnt my plastic one the other day)

Aaaahhhh!! Kenapa lif ini tidak pandai berhenti naik!!??!
(Aaaahhhh!! Why won’t the elevator stop ascending!!??!)

Lagu seterusnya adalah ‘Melebur Kisah Simpanan’
(My next song is Melty Tale Storage)

Datanglah… syiok sendiri di Kem Musim Panas!
(Come and… enjoy yourself at Summer Camp!)

Kepala tahi bodoh!!!!
(Stupid shithead ≠ bakayaro?)

And oh, Minorin is looking forward to Malaysian food —> (ふむふむ。。。料理がおいしそう… ) durian and beer, anyone?

Edit: Uhhh after much thought and reflection I realise this post is ridiculously insulting and god forbid Minorin ever read it. So I’m cutting the cruelest part out.

みのりんがすごく好きです・・・反省しています。

  • He…Hey you started that line for the kiri and kanan thing. I merely suggested alternative words for it!
And you really wrote Melebur Kisah Simpanan as Melty Tale Storage. Lol. What’s Paradise Lost then? Firdaus sesat? Syurga hilang? Lol. Okay I don’t even want to think anymore.
I got A1 for Malay in SPM too but can I even write an essay in Malay now? Like hell no lol.

And Malaysians food. Yummy. But anyway as a Malaysian, it’s really touching to see Minorin buying a book to learn our language (which even I myself stopped bothering about) and she even state that to the very least, she wants to be able to greet the crowd in Malay (あいさつだけでも、マレー語で話せるようにして行きたいと思います). Awwwwwww.

  • ..you onli credited me for dat awsm line, so here I add one to clear my name! But LOL my Malay sucks.

Saya amat bodoh tapi karakter animasi bergerak saya selalu pandai.
(I’m dumb but my anime characters are smart)

    ………Kepala tahi bodoh!!! *ROFLMAO*

  • Oh tidak. Kepala saya nak pecah (Oh no. My head is going to explode) At least she said SAYA DARI JUBUN rather than SAYA DARI JAMBAN ^^;

  • r

    That’s kinda cute of Minorin. Not like she’ll remember anything later on. Haha, the only one I didn’t get was the elevator one. What’s the story with that? >__>;

And thanks for unintentionally reminding me how I have durian in the basement freezer. Icky.

Man, I really, really wish I could you gals across the Lake (the Atlantic is the Pond) to see Minorin this summer, especially since Malaysia is a place I’d like to see as well. But I just got back from Italy, and I don’t think I can take two transoceanic voyages in one year. Hopefully DaiCon will get some quality stars next year. (Like perhaps Kaori Fukuhara if Juuden-chan is a hit.)

PS: How would you say, “Have you guys tried the new Tyrol chocolates yet? Wait, do you even have Tyrol chocolate here?”

  • Basaka

Well, Japanese doesn’t have ‘L’, they use R instead. So the book isn’t as bad as it looks (although I only know Chinese and English well =s)

No one ever comes to NZ…

Although I went back to Taiwan in December last year, and I got to go to her concert. You should REALLY look forwards to her live. THEY ARE EPIC.

  • veester

If she says any of these, you MUST let us know :P I’m excited!

  • mouselmm

(Will you share a grave with me?)

    You got me there good.
Waiting for a resounding “YES” during Daicon XD

  • dylandy

OH GOSH MAKE ME PROUD GUYS >_<
    *manly tears*

oh gowd boobies shaking D :

  • Vness

I think I have a good idea of what the “left and right” phrase is supposed to be talking about. I’m also beginning to question my sanity as I read the translations. And I agree w/ Veester: let us know if she speaks at least some Malay, even if it’s wrong!

  • shia

It was funny reading it, but in retrospect I feel bad for her a bit. It does feel a little insulting after reading down the whole thing, Even though we know it was done in good humor.

  • She might just try that durian/beer combo, you know.

  • LOL those are all said by Minorin eh…or anything happens around her XD

I can’t help but laugh DX

  • Hahaha. Program seterusnya ialah, ajar dia makan durian! And I’m sure even if she wrote like that on the blog, I’m sure she sounds better in real life. *nods* *nods*

  • piro

aiya. berry didn’t consult me for BM.. lol

and i’d like to see her makan durian. :P

  • God, my brain can’t process BM anymore, it’s like every time I try to say something in Malay, the Japanese equivalent comes out of my mouth instead (the part of my head processing languages is screwed). It was embarrassing when someone asked how to say “Konnichiwa” in BM and the only thing I could come up then was “Selamat – ” ORZ (Okay, I admit I got a bloody B for the subject in SPM) And let’s not start with Katakana-ing BM… -_-”

    LOL Melebur Kisah Simpanan XD

  • reminds me of BM oral, where everyone gets to say some catchy phrase which is never used in real life.

too bad it wouldn’t be real durian season then, fresh durian ftw!

  • Let’s get Minorin to try the Durian/Beer combo BEFORE her concert!

On second thought, let’s not do it. Won’t want us to waste the money we spent on the concert tickets, yes?

  • Yume

    OMG! LOL! XD;; Nampak sangat dah lama tak berlatih BM, ya? XD;;

Ah, I really wanna hear Minorin speak BM! XD

  • July would be the durian, manggis season, so don’t worry. There will be plenty of them in Petaling Street or at any random Jusco and Carrefour stores :P

  • Somehow this is turning into a “Marilah kita tengok Minorin makan durian” post lol. I wonder what Minorin’s management or the DaiCon people will comment about this hahaha.

In another random news, tiada orang mahu makan pisang ke? XD

  • j1m0ne

…..Bahasa Melayu saya パーフェクトですよ… on second thought I share issa-sa’s problem of swapping BM words out of my head for Japanese. Like how I could barely remember what a ‘window’ in Malay was, only the word ‘mado’ was stuck in my brain…

Weird thing is that I speak BM every single day for work purposes but when it comes to constructing proper sentences… nope, can’t remember :3

Apalah kau orang ni, mau kasi Minorin matikah – makan durian, minum bir. And berry, tak mau makan pisang leh. Nanti cirit-birit…. I guess KL tarak tarap ah…. er, aiyah rambutan, manggis, mangga OK redilah.

  • “Hahahahaha kelakar giler”, or in the english counterpart “lol funny”. No wonder I use less BM and more english.
There’s a subtle difference between writing full compositions a.k.a. karangan and the usual “dah makan ke” or the all time favorite “sayang kat mana”.

Anyways good post, not many posts made me laugh to tears.

  • PPP

I guess you do know that there are certain phonetics in Malay that a native Japanese can’t pronounce properly? :p

Still remember the usual guffaws where ‘rice’ sounds like ‘lice’ and ‘election’ sounds like ‘erection’. Yes, the dreaded L and R sounds. Along with a whole host of sounds like V, TH, KHA and the one I hate most (even though I liked their food)? “NYONYA” (yes I still get it wrong at times)

I guess she’s still making an effort. Kudos!

  • PPP

How about having a fan blowing at you full blast whilst you eat a mountainful of lychees?

Guarantee that you all will waste money for the concert you all are looking forward to. =P

  • Basaka

So, how do you say “I must bring enough money when I go out for lunch” in malay?

  • @Basaka “Saya mesti bawak duit yang cukup bila pergi makan tengahari”

  • blue982

I would to like to add this interesting article to an introduction about Minori’s live in Daicon in an ACG forum in mainland China, is it ok?
    Look forward to your answer

  • j1m0ne

    @blue982
Yes go ahead, it’s OK by me.
