The Wisdom of Kaneda Tomoko: Is Curry Rice the Same as Rice Curry?

So KaneTomo-sensei has finally started imparting (or inflicting) her pearls of wisdom on the interweb population.

Entries have been fairly tame so far but just to keep everyone updated with her current state of mind, here’s a rough translation of her latest post. I think this entry is more amusing if read in the original Japanese, but I have tried my best to retain the essence of what (I think) she’s trying to say.

Ok, food lesson first:

Takoyaki (たこ焼き) – octopus balls —> tako: octopus

Ikayaki (イカ焼き) – grilled squid –> ika: squid

Yakisake (焼き鮭) – grilled salmon –> sake/shake: salmon

Ikura (イクラ) – salmon roe

4th November entry, titled (?_?)

Takoyaki is delicious isn’t it~♪

Takoyaki are called takoyaki because there’s tako in it, right?

So if you use ika instead of tako, would it be called ikayaki?

Then… how would you differentiate between this ikayaki and the grilled type of ikayaki? (^。^;)

And why is grilled salmon not called sakeyaki?

Sake-yaki and yaki-sake, curry rice and rice curry… I don’t get the differences between them that well? (^。^;)

Are they my favourite anastrophes~?

I’ve been thinking about various things too much today, now I’m gonna eat some ikura and go to bed o(^-^)o

The end!

There is indeed, a fine line between genius and insanity.

To quote Huey Lewis, she’s walking on a thin line.

  • mda111

maybe she;s trying to be a poet… lol

  • BlazeZero

Haha, wow. I think she’s crazy, but that just makes me want to read her blog more.
Also, is it me, or does she have incredibly long fingers?

  • Neo Horizon

What profound thoughts. I will be unable to focus on my classes today while I consider her observations about rice curry… or curry rice.

  • That’s not as mind-numbingly stupid as I would expect.

In fact, those are some profound thoughts.

  • oh! Japanese is difficut.
In Japan, curry rice, not rice curry.
fish is yaki zakana. not sakana-yaki, yaki-sakana.

    decide word.

  • LOL!!! I don’t know whether to call her a complete genius or a complete idiot (for wasting time thinking about such things). So… is it curry rice or rice curry? XD

  • This blog post is nothing compared to the new one. *lmao*

    @danie~
I have no idea WTF she’s talking about in the new one LMAO. Sanma? Spiders? WTF?

And obviously, KaneTomo is not stupid since she does have an architecture degree. She’s just weirdly eccentric… or eccentrically weird ^^

  • Vness

That post just broke my brain, but the yummy pictures made up for it :) . I’ve always wanted to try takoyaki.

  • Andrew

She has an architecture degree? Heh, if she were designing buildings, they’d look like something by Dali or Picasso.

I am liking this helium-voiced little nutjob more and more.

  • extratax

I think its curry rice. rice curry would mean curry made of rice (?!) Sometimes I wonder about these things myself.. lol

  • I agree with extratax. It should be curry rice. At least that’s what I have called it all my life.

  • karasu

Actually, I’m quite sure Rice Curry describes curry that is meant for rice. Curry isn’t always eaten with rice, though there’s nothing preventing curry to ever go with rice from my knowledge, however it’s possible that there’s curry that’s meant to be eaten with something else other than rice.

I am mildly amused that we seem to be having a deep discussion about something Kaneda Tomoko said.

  • Andrew

She inhales helium and exhales marijuana smoke, so that explains it. Duuuuuuuuuude.

“I am mildly amused that we seem to be having a deep discussion about something Kaneda Tomoko said.”

Like they say, the line between genius and insanity is very fine. Indeed!

This reminds me a little of some TV ad (years ago) with two girls arguing about 奶茶 and 茶奶 (some drink product from Taiwan or something).

    *is an idiot*

kono ikura wa ikura desu ka?

ok, done with the really bad puns… but really. she’s thinking mathy. that’s kinda weird…
