Touring A Seiyuu Otaku’s Bedroom - Yes, It’s As Boring As You Think It Is
I’ve been itching to do one of these posts for a while, and the posts over at Heterochromia finally got me to go snapping pictures around my room. So a break from the norm of seiyuu lists and posts, here’s something about myself for a change. But I’m an incredibly boring person, and yet another closet ‘otaku’(?) - so no dakimakura, ceiling posters or a sizeable figure/DVD/manga collection in plain sight.
This has been my official bedroom for the last 7 years, though I’ve probably only used it for at most, 2 1/2 years (the other times, I’ve been sleeping in some cramped college dorm). I only spend around 7 hours a day in the room, and all of those hours are spent in states known as Rapid, and Non-Rapid Eye Movement (i.e. asleep). My laptop isn’t in my bedroom, my PS2 has been packed away and I don’t have my own TV so even less reason for me to hang around in it
Er, sorry for the crap pix quality (I took them at night - that’s the only time I’m ever home)…I was never good at photography anyway.
Tour

Basically, this is what you’ll see when you enter my room - my queen-sized bed, with some cupboards for clothes on the right of the bed (from where I’m standing), and some cabinets and drawers on the left. Er yes, quite a few pillows I have too. If you’re wondering what that pile of stuff on my bed is, it’s what I call my bed-time reading collection - a bunch of seiyuu mags, Newtype/Animage and some books (you’ll notice that I tidied them up later too). Hmmm, what else might you notice if you clicked to see the enlarged version? An organic egg carton that houses a bunch of unused speakers, an ugly blanket + awfully untidy bed, some Gundam model boxes? And bottles of coins, which come in handy during card sessions ^^;

A bit of continuity then, panning to the right. That’s the rest of the cupboards, my dusty Yamaha acoustic in the corner, and a very useful sink and mirror. You can see part of my curtains (and its relection in the mirror too). There’s also two scales on the floor, one of which actually works and one which obviously doesn’t (and cost me about US$6). Guess which one?

Moving to the right again, there’s the view from my bed. An air conditioning unit, the essential feature of every Malaysian home. The only window in my room, my door, and that’s one of the suit jackets I wear to work every day hanging on a chair. Oh, boring corporate attire.

And hey, that’s my nearly empty table. Except for all the handbags, a Haruhi DVD box and a pretty big Chuckie (from Rugrats) doll - if you pull the string on his belly button he does a little rumbling growl. There’s also a black DS around somewhere if you can spot it. Note: I don’t actually use my table for anything at all. Look, I don’t even have a chair for sitting at the table. And the poster on the side of the cupboard? It’s a monthly rotation seiyuu poster, this time it’s Tanaka Rie in full leather gear with gun/rifle/shooting thingy/whatever.

Close up of Tanaka Rie poster.

The cabinet. I’m not a figure collector at all, I just bought all that stuff in there on a whim - or I got them in some random gashapon, or free with a magazine. Spot Onsokumaru? And oh yes, Rugrats again. I used to be a huge fan when I was a kid… look at those sports medals too. Geeky me, I used to be a relay runner. Oh, lonely pink/maroon robot thingy at the back of the top shelf too.

Some of my books. Yeah, quite a few Murakami books, though some of them have gone walkabout somewhere (Norwegian Wood?). I like food books, fantasy stuff and non-fiction, some of my favourite stuff isn’t even here either (where’re my Eric Schlosser books?). If you’re wondering what those comic book thingies are on the top shelf, they’re Football Picture Story Monthly comics - I have about a 100 or so of them? Collectors’ items these days I think. I also have loads of Archie comics but they’re hidden behind the novels and books. Loads of JRR Tolkien books on the bottom shelf that you can’t see either, plus the whole Narnia series. The Gundam thing is a pack of playing cards, by the way.

One of my boxes of CDs (I have many - that’s where most of my money goes, in fact), you can see them under my table in one of the pictures above. I swear that Cliff Richard double disc doesn’t belong to me! Otherwise, an odd mix of Japanese indie bands and mainstream Jpop (BoA??? I don’t remember buying that).
But yeah, boring. I need to spice it up with something a bit more exciting…I can’t think what though. And wait. I titled the post ‘A Seiyuu Otaku’s Bedroom’, but you’d hardly be able to tell from looking at it though, eh? Only the Tanaka Rie poster says so ^^;;

The Aria figures look so cute! I wish I had Aria figures too… If you think your room is boring, then I need a new word to describe how plain my room is. ![]()

Hello. I have your Norwegian Wood by the way. Wanted to take it with me but the luggage was too heavy. I MIGHT have Eric Schlosser but only Reefer Madness, I definitely don’t have Fast Food Nation. Anyways, you’re room is positively packed compared to my whole place. No bed even. T_T

Aww, I’m sure your futon is doing a good job anyway. I’ll buy you a proper bed when I get there, advance b’day present…or would you rather have a TV? I do have FFN in a drawer somewhere, I think. The drawer in your room probably
>jouttex
Can’t say I’ve ever listened to it though ^^; Yeah, yeah I just wanted the stationery - I’m a softie for Ichigo Mashimaro merch. I’d rather have Aya than Noto Mamiko any day anyway…oh hang on, I have both. LOL XD My other Nana CDs are sitting somewhere untouched & unopened…like a lot of stuff I own >_>

Could never own a ceiling poster anyway, the fan would shred it to bits ^^;;

Oh ho~ You were an All Saints student? Cool! I wanted to study there but I got chucked to a private school instead. And looking at those trophies/medals reminded me of the annual sports days, which were hell for me coz I used to get forced into participating in more events than I could handle. Ugh… I hated my school days ==||. It’s a good thing working life now isn’t as bad.
Cool collection you have there. It’s too bad our city’s shops don’t sell a lot of Japanese media products (or I just don’t know where to find them ^^; ). I end up purchasing most of my goods from online stores like Amazon Japan and YesAsia.

Whoops, didn’t think any1 would spot the All Saints trophy XD But yeah, looking back, life in Smallsaints wasn’t so bad. Cos the discipline was so lax students basically ran riot & ruled the school ^^;; Btw - private school = TTSS?
And yeah, most of my goods come from online stores & of course, the load of rubbish I drag back from my trips to Tokyo…

Haha small world, isn’t it? Always awesome to meet someone from the same city coz when you’re talking about Malaysian bloggers who review Japanese entertainment and media, I have yet to meet one who is from Sabah, let alone KK. Most of them are from the peninsular.
TTSS? During my school days (nearly a decade ago), that was the last school I would ever want to go to. Some of my primary schoolmates went there for secondary education and were complaining like nuts coz the school forced them to have classes on Sundays as well. I heard some parents even complained that their kids weren’t spending enough time at home. Kinda extreme lol. Anyway, I studied at MN, that one located at Kingfisher Park. I felt a bit left out as everyone in my family (including parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins etc etc.) went to All Saints. Parents sent me to a private school to see the kind of education I would receive (Was a little like a guinea pig :p), but it wasn’t that different really. Only that our main medium of communication is English instead of Malay, even though our study materials are in Malay to conform with the national standards. When I was still studying there, life was *quite* all right. It’s after the year that our class batch left, and the principal resigned, things took a rather…interesting turn. A nun became the principal, and according to one of my friends’ sibling who was a student then, everything plunged into what they called “The Dark Era” (students running amok and teachers desperately trying to enforce harder discipline, most of the time to no avail). Oh, and the entire school got painted pink as well. ^^;

Pink, lol! That’s hilarious. Ah, sucks to have not gone to All Saints then - I was around when we got in the papers for that alleged ‘parang’-wielding incident (completely blown out of proportion), and the school basically turned into a zoo for the rest of my time there til they got a new headmistress. Heard it’s like the army now ^^;

I would have been surprised if you DID have ceiling posters and a dakimakura :3
‘Though that Tanaka Rie poster is really something… and it’s right next to your pillow, so you wake up to it heh? The Utawarerumono merch is so cute.
