What do you do with a mouldy CD?

So I got some more stuff in the post today - a bunch of Chihara Minori CDs (not to be opened) and Spitz’s Wakaba (opened, because I haven’t even heard the song yet).

Now I’m not the sort of person who buys multiple copies of a release, since I’d really rather spend the cash on some other album to feed the music junkie in me.

But I had to purchase a second copy of Minorin’s Contact, since I made a grave and almighty error that rendered my original CD almost unplayable… let’s just say Natsu o Wasuretara now sounds like a funky hip-hop track.

How it got to this point
01. I was going away on holiday for the weekend.
02. My car was being ‘rented out’ to my cousin while I was away.
03. Hence I removed the Contact CD from my car’s CD player.
04. I took it into the house, left it on top of a wooden cabinet and forgot about it.
05. I went away on holiday.
06. It rained heavily the entire weekend (weather tends to be wet and humid here)
07. When I returned I spied the CD on top of the cabinet and went ‘Oh shi…’
08. Contact CD now looks like it has a bad case of leprosy.
09. I thought it was scratched…. but no, it’s mould. Aargh!
10. No amount of toothpaste, cleaning fluid, alcohol etc will work because the mould is in the inner layer of the CD.
11. I ordered a second copy of Contact and I swear I won’t open it this time.

It doesn’t show up too clearly in the photo above (looks more like scratches there), you can only see it under light & I can only take pictures at night. I thought of sending it to a CD repair shop, but the prospect of owning an ex-mouldy CD didn’t seem that exciting to me.

So I’m now thinking of ways to best utilise a mouldy CD. A coaster is the obvious solution, or maybe a frisbee or a gaudy christmas tree decoration. Any other suggestions?

——————————

Random, but here’s a mixture of old & new Minorin pictures for your perusal (lord knows if I’ve posted them before, my memory is short).

…I happened to be er… randomly viewing Minorin pics in my office one day a few weeks ago when my colleague wandered over and said “Oh she’s pretty! Too bad her left eye is smaller than her right eye though…” It actually never bothered me that much, but I suppose looking at her photoshoots you can see how they compensate for it by taking pictures from flattering angles, using her hair as camouflage etc.

Wow, I thought I knew humidity visiting my relatives on America’s east coast, but humid enough to damage a CD is a new one for me. Okay, so I went to Costa Rica last winter and that was pretty intense. I guess the tropics is in a league of its own. And the mold got into the inner lining? Wow; I had no idea that was possible.

Never noticed Minorin has different-sized eyes before. I think my eyes aren’t entirely aligned myself (one’s higher than the other; or is it the other that’s lower? Hmm…). (Goes into Osaka mode)

Oh, and as for the damaged CD; if you have any fruit trees in your yard, you could hang it from the branches to scare away birds from eating the fruit. That’s what my dad does with software CD’s we occasionally get in the mail.

Forget about it and buy a new one, which you already did, so just forget about it. ^^; But yeah, never heard a humid weather can cause permanent harm to CD..

And I also noticed Minorin’s uneven eyes.. but who cares, she still looks #$@%#$!#@! pretty to me. Who on earth has a perfectly aligned left-right eyes anyway?

Btw I dun really like the hm3 set (photo #3), she looks like she wears 10cm make-up or something.

    Poor Minorin CD.

My friend made a clock out of one, probably the most creative use I’ve seen in person.

Wow, I didn’t knew CD’s could get mouldy. I almost never unwrap anything I buy so I never discovered that could happen, LOL.

I salute your dedication as a Minorin fan by actually buying another copy to replace it.

Crap…after reading what happened to your Contact CD..I realized I left my Minorin concert DVD somewhere…suddenly I have a bad imagination of the DVD getting covered in cobwebs…I should start searching. But before that …*clicks and copy pasta every single Minorin pictures posted*. Yay.

Wait, CDs can get moldy? O_o; Well, you already got another CD, so that’s good. There’s really nothing you can do with the moldy one, unless you feel like pulling a prank on someone and giving them the moldy CD…

And I didn’t notice that Minorin’s eyes were uneven until now — not that it matters because she’s still uber pretty.

Even non-Minorin fans can appreciate her beauty ^_^.

I didn’t even know CDs could get moldy…eew. I accidentally left my boombox with a CD in it outside once when it started to rain. The boombox was filled with water, which took a few days to drain. Surprisingly, both things still work.

The CD would make a nice coaster IMO.

    CD = Hoverdisc…

have you ever done that? :P Pretty simple… Blow up a balloon a little, but don’t tie it… stick the end in the CD hole and tape securely on the other side… make sure you cover the end of the balloon completely. just kinda leave it on the table… if you do it properly, it should float slightly on top of the table. kinda like air hockey, but with a disc/balloon.

    Fun times :D
    I’ve learned something amazing though… moldy CDs…

I work at my university’s computer center and we like to hang colorful CDs on a Christmas tree during December. :D Think of the mold as an added decorative look to your CD ornament.

Well, I remember reading somewhere that certain club DJs =deliberately= let mould grow on their CDs/vinyls/whatever it is they’re spinning…they claim it adds a little special something. The things people do for making music. ._.

Perhaps j1m0ne-san can come to appreciate this new dimension to the Contact CD. lol If not, maybe you could offload it online to one of those folks…xD

Interesting, didn’t know a CD could develop mold. And that CD clock idea is pretty nifty, especially if it’s with Minorin’s CD (even with the mold). There’s lots of sites where you can learn to make one and buy parts for it.

That last Minorin pic made me melt, btw ♥ Regardless of eye symmetry.

Coaster? Or… wait, Christmas is coming right? Just get it up hanging in the middle of the room. I’m sure it will make a part of a nice Christmas decor.

Anyway, there is no perfect beauty. Minorin got uneven eyes, Yukarin got big ears, Ho-chan’s teeth isn’t perfectly straight, Hirano Aya’s known to have a short fuse.
I guess Seiyuus are the best reminder to us that you can’t have talent, voice, personality and looks all rolled into one single package. The very reminder that Seiyuus are also human beings is perhaps the very same reason that keeps all of us attracted to them.

make a costume out of it. But really, someone in my school did that once..I think it was supposed to be futuristic. XD

I like veester’s hoverdisc idea though! Gonna try that out some time. XD
